Meg Higham with Collection Plate
Meg Higham is holding the special brass collection plate that her great-grandmother, Margaret Hardie, donated.
Dr. Robert Hardie, medical missionary and Meg's great-grandfather, went to Korea in the late 1800s. He and his family had lived in the solid brick house at the corner of Hwy. 6 and Unity Road. They attended Unity Church. He was well liked in Korea where he served as a missionary. The Women’s Missionary Society (W.M.S.) was formed in 1895 at Unity Church. In 1913, the brass offering plate was given to the Unity W.M.S. by the Hardie’s. It was used for the offering from that time until the group joined Grace United Church ladies in the 1990s. Joan Bates was the last treasurer of the Unity U.C.W. (W.M.S. became United Church Women in 1962). Ora Howley had been the previous treasurer. Each treasurer guarded the plate.
